Box office triumph : Two films pass $1 billion in 2012

Blockbusters excel in 2012 box office

It's been a tremendous year for major Hollywood movies, particularly with larger box office totals abroad. In 2012 alone, two major releases have reached the all time top 10 grossing films list.

Earlier this year, superheroes and villains came together in one epic motion picture called 'The Avengers', smashing its way through the $600 million mark in the U.S alone. In 2012, 'The Avengers' successfully made it to the all time top 10 highest grossing films, with a global total of $1.5 billion. Historical records places 'The Avengers' in 3rd place behind 'Titanic' and 'Avatar'.

Next in line is the most recent work of Christopher Nolan : 'The Dark Knight Rises', the final chapter of Batman, which was met with an equally dark tragedy. On its opening night, a lone gunman shot and killed 12 people in a local theatre in Aurora. The film was met with mixed reviews, but managed to climb up the international box office after an initial lull.

'The Dark Knight Rises' has earned to date over $1.05 billion, which includes $441.1 million in domestic takings, putting it in 9th place out of the top 10 highest grossing films.
