Even without a Star Wars movie coming out during 2018, Disney still managed to eclipse it’s all time best box office record from 2016, thanks to a number of hits including “Black Panther” which received critical acclaim and is in contention for a number of awards which include Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Original Music Soundtrack and Best Sound Mixing. The film is nominated in a total of 6 categories at this year’s Academy Awards.

“Black Panther” surpassed $700 million at the domestic box office and went on to gross $1.34 billion worldwide. Other films that pushed Disney to new heights in 2018 included the hugely successful “Incredibles 2” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”

2019 is also set to be a big year for Disney releases as the highly anticipated “Toy Story 4” and “The Lion King” as well as “Aladdin” head for cinemas. Later this Christmas, “Star Wars: Episode IX” will be released with director J.J. Abrams returning along with an all-star cast including Mark Hamill, Lupita Nyong’o and John Boyega.
