Ben Affleck's 'The Town' received early buzz that it would get a Best Picture or a Best Screenplay nomination, but the actor was not amongst today's nominees.

The actor turned director was praised for his work in The Town , however Jeremy Renner is up for an Oscar in the Supporting Actor category.

Facing competition from Christian Bale, John Hawkes, Mark Ruffalo and Geoffrey Rush, Renner will face a difficult contest. The King's Speech which has been a favourite at the Golden Globes could do well at this year's Oscars but nothing is further from certain.

In the past, the Golden Globes were considered a clearer indication of who would get an Oscar win, but this has never proven to be totally accurate.

Christian Bale's performance in 'The Fighter' won him a Golden Globe. Will his performance sway the Oscar voters to put him ahead in this category?
