‘100 Streets’ starring Idris Elba and Gemma Arterton has managed to earn just £245 on its opening weekend in the UK.
To put the number into perspective, approximately 25 people were convinced in the entire country to go and see this movie that also featured a raunchy sex scene between the two A-list stars. But in the end, even this seductive lure was not enough to bring audiences to cinemas.
In fact, the opening was dismal due to a lack of publicity in the UK market. Very few people were able to hear about the film’s release as it didn’t cut above the noise or have any significant exposure to audiences. In this case, star value was irrelevant because even the film’s stars were not actively promoting it.
The film is already available on VOD, so a theatrical run is pretty much over unless a distributor picks it up for a foreign release and it gets traction.
This is not the first time we’ve seen a film with well-known actors collapse at the box office. Al Pacino and Anthony Hopkins featured in a film that earned just £97 back in the summer. Back in 2013, Christian Slater also starred in a feature that earned less than $300 at the box office.
