Cinema’s biggest ceremony opened in style last night as stars walked the red carpet at the 2019 Academy Awards and the world watched the winners make their grand entrance on stage.
Following a backlash just days prior to last night’s ceremony, the Academy Awards listened to their critics and adjusted the format of the ceremony to accommodate cinematography and 3 other categories that would have been cut from the live telecast.
The ceremony was generally well received and there were spectacular performances. The overall feedback from audiences has also been positive on social media. After a disastrous low audience viewership in 2018 following years of ratings declines, it looked like the film industry’s flagship event was finally back on steadier ground. Last night’s ceremony drew in an extra 3 million viewers on 2018, thanks in part to blockbusters being included in the line-up, a more diverse array of films and a shorter ceremony (without a host).
Viewers overwhelmingly appreciated the new telecast format which will be welcome news to The Academy - giving the Oscars new momentum for the coming years as the film industry welcomes and supports the next generation of filmmakers.
Here are just a handful of tweets about last night’s ceremony:
