The top 5 biggest movies at the box office in 2012 earned 20% more than in 2011
Thanks to the enormous success of 'The Avengers', 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'The Hunger Games', fans flocked to the screen to watch these very big releases, which pushed the top 5 grossing movies to more than $2 billion in box office receipts.
Looking back at 2011, the top 5 movies, including 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2' and 'Transformers Dark Of the Moon' did well, but only managed to earn $1.5 billion in total.
This 20% increase can be partly attributed to the fact that 'The Avengers' was a hugely accessible release thanks to the incorporation of many superheros, each with enormous fan bases. In addition, the controversy behind the 3rd and final Batman movie, and the hype for 'The Hunger Games', gave this year's biggest releases a better edge with audiences.
Outside the top 5, box office receipts totalled $8.5 billion domestically for 2012. In 2011, this was $8.67 billion.
