World War One epic film ‘1917’ tops BAFTAs with 7 awards

‘1917’ was the big winner at last night’s BAFTA Awards, taking a total of 7 awards including Best Film.

The World War One epic directed by Sir Sam Mendes received critical praise and was a favourite at the 2020 BAFTA ceremony, garnering awards for Outstanding British Film, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound, Special Visual Effects, Best Film and Best Director.

Starring George MacKay, Mark Strong, Dean-Charles Chapman, Andrew Scott, Claire Duburcq, Benedict Cumberbatch and Colin Firth, the film is set on April 6th, 1917 where two British soldiers are given the task to deliver a message to call off an attack on German infantry in a tactical retreat, which is doomed to fail as they prepare a massive artillery bombardment on British troops approaching the Hindenburg Line.

Produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures, Reliance Entertainment and Amblin Partners, the film has grossed more than £31 million at the U.K. box office.

Cinematographer Roger Deakins was praised for his work on the film at the BAFTAs. The film was also co-written by Sir Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who gave a speech on behalf of the cast and crew on stage.

“Such an honour to accept the award on behalf of the 1917 cast & crew. Also very pleased I got a shout out to Glasgow in there. And a very special thanks to the 5 Glaswegians in the audience that cheered,” said Krysty Wilson-Cairns.
