NEW YORK, USA - Airing on Friday night, Winds Of War , a documentary featuring Ann Curry with George Clooney in Sudan reveals some stories hidden from the rest of the world.
Facing a January referendum on whether southern Sudan will secede from the rest of the country, the documentary has been released to show just how the decades long civil conflict has affected the people of this impoverished African nation.
During the trip, a village elder spat on Clooney which was a break from the handshakes and the hugs he gets on the red carpet from co-stars and girlfriends:
"It was a tradition I haven't seen," he reportedly said. "She pulls you down and spits into your hands, then she pulls your head down and spits on top of your head." - NY Daily News
Bringing some star power often adds momentum in raising awareness of issues that are seemed forgotten by others, but are so important to global security, and prosperity.
Clooney met with the victims of Sudan s civil war, amongst them, those who have been tortured, revealing some difficult moments, particularly witnessing the mass graves, a cold reminder of the holocaust and recent mass murder during the 1990s Bosnian War.
Speaking with the Huffington Post, Ann Curry notes that : "There are stories that are 'must-covers. When there are stories that raise questions about whether genocides may be coming...it crosses a line and the crisis in Southern Sudan is unique one, since it focuses on a possible genocide, not one that is already occurring. That made it even more important to bring attention to the region.
George Clooney responds to Ann Curry in the special on why he goes to Sudan when he cloud be drinking wine in Italy: If I said to you right now 90 days from today there s going to be an earthquake, that 200,000 people are going to be killed, what would you do? Wouldn't you do everything you could to make people as safe as possible?
In January Clooney launched the MTV Hope for Haiti Telethon in response to the devastating earthquake. He has traveled to Sudan, and put the war in Darfur on the map, and raised international awareness of the conflicts and poverty in Africa. Amongst his missions, George has also teamed up with Bono for One campaign to fight poverty around the world.
