LOS ANGELES Last night s Golden Globe Awards was as glitzy and exciting as one can imagine with British comedian Ricky Gervais providing some lighthearted humour throughout the evening.

James Cameron s Avatar came out on top to win Best Motion Picture. To the surprise of many, Up In The Air was awarded only one of its 6 nominations; Best Screenplay. However, despite the surprises, the awards were a big success for many, and is the first major award ceremony of the season.

Sandra Bullock won a much-deserved best actress and could be tipped for an Oscar when the ceremony takes place in March.

Martin Scorsese was honored the lifetime achievement Cecil B. DeMille Award alongside his longtime friend and collaborator Robert De Niro who told the audience Marty sleeps, drinks and eats film.
