Will Smith in 'After Earth' falls far behind 'Fast and Furious 6'

After Earth vs Fast and Furious 6

Vin Diesel and Will Smith have gone head to head at the box office this weekend, and the clear winner is 'Fast and Furious 6'.

Will Smith's 'After Earth' opened to sub-par reviews, and audiences were less enthusiastic for his latest blockbuster directed by M. Night Shyamalan, which opened in 3rd place behind 'Now You See Me' this week.

With the global fan base for 'Fast and Furious 6' still strong, and the movie raking in more than $480 million worldwide, 'After Earth' was no match for the action packed sequel. However, 'Fast and Furious 6' currently has a wider release, playing in 3,600+ theatres as opposed to 3400 for 'After Earth'.

So far 'Fast and Furious 6' has managed to earn a domestic gross of $170 million, and with Vin Diesel's social media strategy in promoting the movie ahead of its release, it looks like he managed to give the fans a bigger reason to head to the box office.

Did social media have an impact on the box office success of these movies?
