“Toy Story 4” has managed to smash past the $1 billion mark this week as the film’s success in several markets takes its total to a new record high.
After receiving glowing reviews and a spectacular 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s not difficult to see why the film is doing so well. And after 20 years since the original film reached theaters in the mid 90s, know one quite knew what to expect for the movie sequels, or whether they could live up to the original.
On Wednesday, the film officially passed $1.01 billion at the global box office, giving Pixar a triumphant win and its 8th largest release so far. The film has yet to open in a number of markets, and may still break further records.
So far, it has earned $420m domestically, and crossed the $70m mark in two markets including Mexico and the U.K.
With over 50% of its box office takings from overseas markets, there’s anticipation that the film could prove to be one of the most successful animation films of all time when it opens in several new territories.
“Toy Story 4” brings back iconic characters from the first film including Woody and Buzz Lightyear, featuring the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Christina Hendricks, Jordan Peele and Keanu Reeves. It was directed by Josh Cooley with an estimated production budget of $200 million.
