The cars of 'Fast and Furious 6' : Preview

The cars behind the action this coming May

It’s hard to decide which will be more fun with “Fast & Furious 6“ (Fast 6”) when it lands in theaters on May 24— the car chases and crashes—or watching how the characters take down a ruthless mercenary organization led by Dominic’s former girlfriend, Letty Ortiz.

Rio

When we last saw our favorite characters, Dominic (Vin Diesel), Mia (Jordana Brewster) and Brian (Paul Walker) in “Fast & Furious 5: Rio Heist,” they had managed to flee across the globe with $100 million split among them. The crew discovers crime-lord Hernan Reyes’ millions are stashed in the police station. They steal the vault containing his money and Dom uses it to smash the vehicles pursuing him, after which Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) “dispatches” Reyes. And Hobbs discovers that Letty, who everyone thought was dead, is still alive.

Now “fast”-forward. In Fast 6, the action shifts from Rio to London. What brings our heroes to the British capital is a request from Hobbs, who pays a visit to Dom’s luxury hideaway and offers him and the gang full pardons if they’ll help him take down a network of brutal mercenary drivers intent on blowing up stuff at street level in 12 countries. In the process of going after these bad guys, Dom, Mia, Brian and the team drive or chase nearly three dozen cool cars, including the Nissan GT-R. The sports car has a 545 hp twin-turbo V-6. Nissan dealers list the GT-R’s 2013 MSRP at $98,100 (in case you were curious).

From the movie’s trailers, we know that we’ll get to watch how a GT-R maneuvers on a curvy mountain road. There are plenty of other cars we can look forward to seeing in Fast 6, including a BMW M5, three different models of Ferrari, a Subaru Impreza WRX STi, two Dodge Charger SRT-8 models, a Dodge Challenger SRT-8 and at least three vintage vehicles, one of which is a 1969 Ford Mustang, according to the Internet Movie Cars Database. Collectively, the vehicles cost close to a million dollars, depending on the model year. Let’s be honest. It is somehow cathartic to watch all that glass and steel get smashed or go up in flames, especially knowing how expensive it is.

Interest in and anticipation for this movie is so intense that the film’s Facebook page has generated 25 million likes, more than any active film series except “Avatar," according to NYTimes.com. On the fan page, you can see more than 40 videos and clips related to the Fast & Furious franchise, not just Fast 6. This fifth sequel to the enormously popular 2001 original “Fast & Furious” movie promises to be the best yet, based on the trailer that aired during the Super Bowl.
