Sensational box office opening for 'Gravity' in 3D

'Gravity' powers to number 1

Alfonso Cuaron's 'Gravity' has stormed to the top of the UK box office after a spectacular 4 day start.

The sci-fi epic starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney managed to pull in an impressive £6.2 million and knocked off 'Thor : The Dark World' to the number 2 spot.

According to the BBC, close to 90% of the revenue came from 3D screenings which could pave the way for more wide releases of 3D blockbusters in the future. With strong domestic demand for the film, which has been considered a 'space drama', could we eventually see a new sci-fi genre for 3D becoming mainstream?

Over in the US, 'Gravity' earned $55 million in its opening weekend back in October, making it the most successful October debut ever.
