South Korean film “Parasite” has made cinematic history at this year’s Oscars by winning Best Picture in a stunner that received a standing ovation.
“Parasite” is the first foreign-language film to have ever won an Oscar for Best Picture, which was met with surprise and awe at the ceremony - taking the limelight and confounding all expectations. Sam Mendes’ “1917” had been the clear favorite, after its success at the British BAFTA film awards last week.
This year, 10 foreign-language films made it to the nomination round which included the likes of “Roma” and “Life is Beautiful,” however it was Bong Joon-ho’s directorial vision that resonated with many of the Oscar voters, and ultimately triumphed.
At the ceremony, Joon-ho praised his idols including Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, thanking them for having inspired him as the film won in 4 categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature Film and Best Original screenplay.
The satire became the highest-grossing South Korean film after its release last year, earning over $167 million at the box office globally and also won the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
