The London Independent Film Festival got underway on Friday with its opening ceremony and the screening of French drama ‘The Golden Age’.
Indie filmmakers descended on London’s Genesis Cinema to take part in the opening festivities which included a red carpet event prior to the screening of debut director Jenna Suru’s period drama set in 1960s France.
Despite the impact of the Coronavirus on many London events, this didn’t dampen the spirit of the festival with the screening for the opening film sold-out, and a visibly packed cinema with attendees in a relaxed and joyful mood.
After 'The Golden Age' was screened, director Jenna Suru participated in an audience Q&A, and spoke more in-depth about the making of her period drama - sharing her experiences of the production and her vision for the film, which was inspired by the 60s music scene. Suru wrote, directed, produced and starred in the film, and was able to shoot her production in over 30 locations.
The director also shared her experience of making the film and talked about how she had received a lot of support in France to make the production a success. She also encouraged other indie filmmakers at the opening ceremony to consider shooting their productions in France.
Opening ceremony red carpet highlights
Following Friday’s opening ceremony, the London Independent Film Festival will be hosting a pre-screening networking event for filmmakers attending on Saturday, followed by the premiere of indie feature ‘Palindrome’ by director Marcus Flemmings who will also participate in a Q&A.

Films in the official competition will also receive online distribution through the UK Film Channel and also get critiqued by UK Film Review.
