“Captain Marvel” was surely going to be a big draw at the box office, and just less than a month in, the film has passed a major milestone and joins a very select club of movies.

Marvel’s new superhero adventure officially crossed $1 billion in box office earnings this week, pushing its total to $1.02 billion which includes an impressive $385 million at home. It also managed to gross $644.5 million internationally with a spectacular $151 million in China since its opening last month.

The film as of today is the 38th most successful film at the box office of all time, but it could go up the ranks in the coming weeks. With another $2 million, it will surpass “The Dark Knight” which managed to smash past $535 million domestically before taking into account the foreign box office to cross over $1.04 billion.

“Captain Marvel” has some way to go to beat the all-time record of "Avatar" and "Titanic," but it joins a host of successful blockbusters including “Iron Man 3,” “Frozen,” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in the top 40 (and maybe it could be in the top 30 by the end of its run).

Just ahead of its release, the film received a backlash over its casting, and with a lacklustre start to the year at the box office, it seemed a distant possibility that it would ever get this far.

However, with the film soaring overseas, it has managed to captivate audiences abroad, helping it pass the symbolic $1 billion total after a record opening at home.
