A new world record has just been set after Austrian Skydiver Felix Baumgartner became the first person to freefall jump from the height of more than 128000ft (24+ miles). The stunt, which was seen as a scientific experiment broke the previous record set 52 years ago by US Air Force Col Joe Kittinger.

Filmed live and broadcast via Youtube, the freefall was a high risk stunt that could have ended in failure. The risks were reduced as much as possible prior to the jump with engineers building a special pressurized capsule suit.
As Felix descended through the stratosphere, his body flipped and turned which created a moment of apprehension. Watchers could also hear Felix as he descended through the atmosphere. His breathing became deep, and fast, as he approached 10,000 ft.
The video showed the reserve oxygen tank level as Felix descended from the height of more than 30km. As he descended the gauge showed he had passed the 700mph speed barrier.
This is a great moment for science, and this successful jump will resonate around the world.
