DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg: 3D TV is safe

DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has endorsed 3D TVs as safe for children despite warnings of side effects.

Several manufacturers including Sony and Toshiba have issued warnings that 3D images could effect the development of the eye in children below 6 years old.

DreamWorks Animation is at the forefront of 3D filmmaking, and despite the suggested risks, in reality, there is no long-term study that can measure the impact of 3D TV on the eyes.

Speaking to the BBC, Katzenberg responded to the health risks of 3D:

The only thing that bothers me about it is that it does not seem to be based on any meaningful research or medical advice. We are in the kid business and we have talked to many people and experts in the field of eye care. It is a hypothetical. What people have said is that for very, very early eye development which we were told is 3 years and younger, not 6 years there is some concern that there might be some issue of are you straining the eye?."

For now, 3D TVs are considered safe, but as more and more films get produced and realized solely for 3D viewers, more studies may be needed to support manufacturer decisions to issue safety warnings.
