After one of the weakest starts in many years for theatrical film releases, “Captain Marvel” has finally managed to end the slump with projections of a $153 million domestic opening. Not only that, but the film is on course to exceed over $300 million overseas, bringing its full worldwide total to $455 million.

Starring Brie Larson in the lead with Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou and Jude Law, “Captain Marvel” has become the 3rd highest ever grossing movie to come out in March and is the biggest opening ever for a female led movie.

The news gets better. With projected receipts topping $455 million, the film could pass $1 billion globally in the coming weeks and is currently ranked the second largest worldwide premiere for a superhero movie. The record holder is “Avengers: Infinity War,” which managed to amass a whopping $640 million when it was released.

With everything working against “Captain Marvel” before its debut and critics calling it racist, political and a ‘white savior’ movie, no one was quite sure whether the opening was ever going to be as strong as this.

Despite the positive news of the film’s record breaking opening, the box office overall was still down 25% on 2018 as of this weekend but there’s still time to catchup with a host of big blockbuster releases coming out later this year.

The movie centres around Carol Danvers (Brie Larsen), who gets caught up in a galatic war between two alien races and becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes: Captain Marvel. The film is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and was filmed on location in Louisiana and California.
