Benedict Cumberbatch in 'Patrick Melrose' series

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch who takes on the role of Patrick Melrose in the new Sky Atlantic series has implied that male stars should boycott films that don’t pay women the same.

In an interview with the Radio Times, Cumberbatch’s comments suggested that male stars should not accept roles unless their female co-stars are paid equally.

Cumberbatch is also using his public profile to champion more diversity through his production company, SunnyMarch. His latest feature project with producing partner Adam Ackland will centre on a “female story” of motherhood during the time of an environmental crisis.

“If it’s centred around my name, to get investors, then we can use that attention for a raft of female projects. Half the audience is female. And, in terms of diversity, ‘Black Panther’ is now the third most successful film of all time.” - Benedict Cumberbatch.

This week at Cannes, a host of female stars walked the red carpet to protest for equal rights. 82 women participated in the historic march including Kristen Stewart, Salma Hayek and Cate Blanchett.

Following the allegations of un-equal pay affecting female co-stars and crew members across the industry, groups of filmmakers, prominent actors and directors have all been taking part in highlighting the issue and encouraging a change that would promote equal pay for TV and movie productions.
