Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey star in indie thriller 'The Purge' which has earned a massive $16.7 million on Friday.
The film which depicts the story of a futuristic 'home invasion' where a family is held hostage, was reportedly shot for no more than $3 million. As a low budget horror/ Sci-fi, the flick was expected to make far less than $16.7 million, let alone earn that in a single day.
Written and directed by James DeMonaco, 'The Purge' also stars Max Burkholder, Adelaide Kane and Edwin Hodge. The film was produced by the makers of 'Paranormal activity' and is distributed by Universal Pictures.
Mixed reviews and a 44% score on Rotten Tomatoes also failed to deter audiences to see the pic which recouped the cost of its entire budget after midnight screenings.
