Released back in December, J.J. Abrams’ exciting and refreshing new Star Wars movie took the box office by storm and smashed records, exceeding “Avatar” in the US to gross over $900 million.

In fact, at the end of its run, the film managed to reach a grand total of $936.6 million with a theater average of $59k after playing in over 4100 cinemas. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” then accelerated past $2 billion at the global box office making over 54% of its revenue in foreign markets. The hugely lucrative and successful film also earned Disney substantial merchandising revenues with various partners releasing Toys, figurines, and Star Wars video games.

Last year there was no doubt that the Star Wars craze was reignited and back stronger than ever before. Thanks to new characters supported by the original cast, the movie met and exceeded the expectations of the fans. Supported by glowing reviews and non-stop media coverage, “Star Wars 7” officially became the 3rd biggest film in history after “Titanic” and “Avatar” worldwide, and the biggest release in the US of all time.

The question remains, can the next Star Wars movie exceed it? The new film is currently set for extensive reshoots following a poor test screening response.
