ABC announced Tuesday the cancelation of sitcom “Roseanne” following the star’s controversial comments on Twitter.
In a series of tweets, Roseanne Barr compared Valerie Jarrett, an Obama aide, to an ape.
Her comments were immediately condemned and branded “racist” by users on Twitter. The tweet, since deleted, was shared with a number of executives at Disney and the star’s talent agency. Within an hour, CNBC reports that talent agency ICM Partners “dropped her” and would no longer be representing the star.
President of ABC Entertainment Channing Dungey issued a statement to USA Today saying that the star’s comments were “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.”
Disney CEO Bob Iger also weighed in on the comments on ABC’s decision to cancel the sitcom, saying that it “was the right thing to do.”
“Roseanne” returned to ABC just this March after a 20-year hiatus and attracted over 18 million viewers for its opening two episodes on the much anticipated 10th season.
Barr has since apologized for her comments however this was not sufficient to reverse ABC’s decision. The next season was already renewed following huge ratings. The success of the revival was also praised by President Trump who called Barr to congratulate her on the sitcom’s revival.
