Idris Elba announces his support for the UK to remain in the EU

Actor Idris Elba has confirmed that he is supporting the UK staying in the European Union.

The actor issued a tweet this evening making it clear that he was supporting the vote to stay in Europe, joining a host of British stars from musicians to writers making their case for Britain to retain its place inside the European Union.

However, the actor faced both praise and anger following his statement with people arguing about the pros and cons of the decision of whether Britain should remain in Europe or not.

Other British stars supporting Britain’s continued membership of the EU include Star Trek actor Sir Patrick Stewart, Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Benedict Cumberbatch and Sir John Hurt.

With Britain edging closer to the historic referendum on the 23rd June, entertainment figures have been sharing their views on whether to remain or not. Sir Patrick Stewart wrote a passionate open letter about why Britain should remain in while actors including John Cleese have come out in support of a Brexit vote.

Back in April, Idris Elba made a speech to members of Parliament to discuss the lack of diversity on British television which was widely praised leading to new reforms in the creative industries to address the issue. He was also recently awarded an OBE for services to drama in March and supports a variety of charitable organisations. His announcement will give a boost to the UK’s remain campaign and comes as the polls indicate a tight race that has erased £100 billion off the UK stock market in just 4 days.
