Golden Globes President Philip Berk condemns Ricky Gervais hosting

Ricky Gervais received mixed reviews for his Golden humour at the Awards Show last night, and today that was reaffirmed by HFPA President Philip Berk.

According to the Hollywoodreporter, Philip Berk felt that Ricky Gervais' jokes towards some of the guests attending the ceremony were totally unacceptable...When you hire  Ricky Gervais, you expect the unexpected."

Although Ricky Gervais is well known for his random humour, unpredictable charm, and controversial attitude, the Office star may have created a divide at the Awards Show between some of its execs and stars.

Whatever the case may be, Gervais delivered on controversy, and managed to irritate celebrities like Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and even Robert Downey Jr, usually a master of cool.

Even though the Golden Globes is always an entertaining and somewhat uplifting Awards ceremony, the importance of the choice in hosts, and subsequent media speculation affects the way the show prepares itself for the next outing.

Ricky Gervais at Golden Globes 2012?

It is unlikely the British host will get another shot at the Awards Show next year after what happened last night, but if the ratings have improved massively because of him, then there is no doubt, he has the magic. However the culture of jokes in Awards ceremonies may be questioned as they can offend some of the most important guests attending. One has to think about the impact if several large Hollywood or British stars avoiding the show because they fear being joked upon .
